Mentors

Whats Involved

Details of the program: we introduce youth with needs or who just want to talk to adults qualified to act as mentors. There are rewards to mentors in that they get to give back to the community just as there are benefits to youth who will see possibilities beyond anything they have ever imagined...

Join Us

Sign up: we perform a brief/confidential background check and then all you need do is commit to one 20 minute conversation with a youth seeking help or information. We do all the arranging and scheduling you just need to take a call at the appointed time. Hopefully you will see the need, become hooked and come back to offer more...

Edit Bio

Tell us a little about yourself: we need this information so we can match you with a youth needing your special experience or skills. We are looking to match work skills, life experience and temperament  to the issues being raised. Maybe it's a need for tangible advice, sometimes just a sympathetic ear is all that's needed in which case we look for compatibilities...

Mentor Log-in

Blogging with other mentors: requires you be logged-in and this gives you access to all the experience and suggestions of others. Mentoring will be much less of a mystery when you get to learn from those who have gone before than if you tried to go it alone. You also get to contribute your own ideas and comment so this will help others learn and avoid from mistakes and corrected. We are expecting to have a very active community of mentors creating new posts and commenting. This mentor area contains a multitude of resources: phone numbers, web sites, email addresses and reference material. All to make your task easier...

Checklist

An intake form: helps us learn from the experience gained in helping others. This is the starting point of our tracking progress from the initial call for help to the very last conversation. If you are offering a one-time conversation then simply filling in a short questionnaire is all that is expected. This will be very useful to the next mentor who takes up the case and will help with continuity. If you feel you have something more to contribute long term then everyone benefits from a comprehensive history with this as the starting point...

Evaluation

Tracking conversations: is essential for the longer term benefit of the youth and for development of the program. This input allows us to improve the service as we gain experience of what works and help us eliminate what doesn't. More importantly mentors track the progress of each situation, can seek help from other mentors and make informed decisions should things need to progress in different directions...

Blog

Blogging: with other mentors and staff is your portal to our learning center. We encourage all mentors to interact freely on the site and help each other grow and improve effectiveness. This is a community based service and new recruits joining all the time; this blog will be their self-help. We will only be successful by combining all our talents and efforts so the individual experiences will be freely shared for all to benefit. We are seeking qualified subject-matter experts in the area of mentoring to supplement this grass-roots/common-sense approach and they will be also accessible on this blog...
