Who We Are

History

Mentor Central was founded in 2014 in response to a need that was lacking in Vermont. Community leaders saw a dramatic increase in the number of youth being left to their own devices, getting involved in drugs, offending, entering the Juvenile Justice system and then re-offending. The District Attorney, Mayor and other business and community leaders, seeking ways to help these youth, helped found the mentoring model now being used effectively in central Vermont as a youth-mentoring program.

Though originally established as an intervention program for youth already involved in the court system, the mentoring model is evolving over time to more of a "prevention" based approach. We now focus on the goal of understanding the youth who are at risk of not reaching their full potential in life, and working to serve them early on in their lives. Mission

The mission of Mentor Central is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships between positive adult role models and youth facing challenges in their personal, social and academic lives. Because of the low population density of our rural state the emphasis is initially focused on using phone calls and forums as a means of communications
